Commonwealth Games is an International multi-sport event was held in Delhi, India from 3rd of October to 14th of October in 2010. As India was hosting almost 71 commonwealth teams and 4352 participants, this event was a pride moment for the peoples of entire nation. This game was officially inaugurated by Prince Charles and Pratibha Patil. The budget estimated by Indian Olympic Association in 2003 for hosting the XIX Commonwealth Games was 16.2 Billion but the day game begun the expenditure was almost 115 billion.

The reason for seven times budget increment was corruption. After the conclusion of Commonwealth Games, a committee was formed to investigate the corruption and mismanagement done by the Organizing Committee of the games. Suresh Kalmadi was the President of Indian Olympic Association and Chairman of Commonwealth Games,2010.  The committee formed to investigate this corruption and mismanagement was led by CAG VK Shunglu.

 


After his preliminary investigation he said that contracts were given to parties who were not even eligible and at very higher prices. Overall, 53 corruption cases were being inspected by CVC. One Such case was Timing Scoring Result (TSR) Case. Two firms bided for Timing Scoring result system one was MSL of Spain with 620 million and other was Swiss firm which bided 1576 million. Officially the bid was opened on 4th November 2009 but before that on 12th October 2009 Kalmadi announced that contract was awarded to Swiss Firm despite of Higher rates. Indian government faced loss of over 900 million in this.

 

On 20th May,2011 CBI filed the charge sheet against Suresh Kalmadi in Special CBI Court. He was arrested and was in jail for 10months. Other than Suresh Kalmadi CBI also named Lalit Bhanot and VK Verma as accused, However, this was not the only corruption which was done in this commonwealth games. The other such case was Queens Baton relay case. Queens baton relay is the relay held around the world before the beginning of the Commonwealth games and in this relay starts from England and goes around all the nation participating in the games.

 


The contract for transporting the queen’s baton around the world was given to a transporter at much higher rates. CBI named Organizing committee official TS Darbari, Sanjay Mohindroo, Ashish Patel, and others in this case. This was some of the irregularities which were in higher values in terms of money. This was not the end. Even the daily needs things like toilet paper, soap, mirror were bought at higher rates. For example, toilet paper which costed 150 rupees was charged almost 1000 rupees, Soap dispenser which costed 150 rupees was also charged 1000 rupees.

The scams were also done by Medical team hired for the treatment of coming athletes in the Commonwealth Games. Stretchers, ECG, MRI scan machines were charged 5 times of their price. Corruption was done on each and everything by charging higher rates and awarding contracts to agencies who were not eligible. However, the positive side of this Commonwealth games was that India ranked 2nd at the end of the games with 38 golds medals, 27 silvers medals  and 36 bronzes medals with total of 101 medals.
