You must have heard many stories about
overnight millionaires and some among them have won lotteries to become
millionaires. According to some people lottery is a curse because poor people
spend quite an amount to become rich. There are many states in India where
lottery is not legal. However some states are exception in which state
government itself runs the lottery schemes.
In India, 13 states allows the
operation of lottery legally and they are Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya
Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur,
Sikkim, Nagaland and Mizoram. Lotteries are of many types like they are drawn
daily, weekly, and monthly or for some special occasion like Diwali, Dusshera,
Christmas etc and the prize amount also differs from draw to draw like daily
draw one have smaller prizes and special occasions one have higher prizes. Let’s
go through different lottery schemes of different states:-
Kerala:-The tax department of Kerala
runs the lottery in state of Kerala. Kerala have weekly lotteries and Bumper
lotteries. One lottery ticket of weekly draw costs around 40 rupees and one can
buy book of lottery which costs around 750 rupees. These lotteries are drawn
every day of week from Sunday to Saturday and prize amount is between 75 lakh
to 80 lakh. The bumper lotteries are drawn on Christmas, Vishu, Monsoon etc.
and the price amount is between 6 crore to 12 crore. The daily draw is done at
3 pm on the draw date.
Goa: - The directorate of small
savings & lotteries runs and monitor the lottery schemes & draw in Goa.
In Goa also there are mainly two lotteries scheme weekly and special like
Diwali. The weekly and monthly draw carry prize amount of around 7 lakh and
special draw carry prize amount around 5 lakh. Some names of the schemes are
Labhlaxmi, Golden Shree Ganesh monthly etc and the result of the scheme is
shown on government website.
Punjab: - Directorate of State
Lotteries runs and monitor the lottery Scheme in Punjab. In Punjab also the
lottery scheme is same as compared to other states like Diwali Bumper Scheme
and Punjab State Dear 100 weekly and the winning prize differs from 1 crore
weekly to 2.25 crore for Bumper schemes.
Maharashtra: - The finance department of Maharashtra runs
the lottery schemes in the state. In Maharashtra there is draw every day except
Sunday. The prize range depends from 11
lakh to 5 lakh and also there are mini prizes of 1 lakh.
West Bengal: - In West Bengal there is
7 weekly lottery draw and several special draw is done on New Year, Holi etc.
Lottery Sambad is played in the morning, afternoon & evening. The maximum
prize in each draw is worth 1 crore. The lottery in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya,
Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland and Mizoram are also similar to West Bengal.
The government claims that the money
earned by conducting these schemes is spent on different welfare schemes which
are run by government. The basic reason behind government running this scheme
is that they don’t want poor people of state to fall in the trap of Gambling
etc.
